Chickasaw artist Jeannie Barbour received her degree in art from Oklahoma State University. Upon graduation, she entered the highly competitive field of advertising as a professional illustrator. Her work has been featured in local, regional and national ad campaigns for a variety of clients.Through much research, the artist has documented in her work little known facts about southeastern tribal culture and the Chickasaw Nation specifically. Her work has been exhibited and won awards in numerous competitions across the United States and has been featured in a variety of Native American publications. In 1996 Barbour's work was selected for exhibition at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to her work in Native American arts, Barbour lectures on the subjects of Chickasaw political structure and culture. She teaches Chickasaw history classes and has been involved in the research and repatriation of tribal funerary objects and human remains located in the Chickasaw homelands. In 1992 she was appointed to serve on the Oklahoma Film Commission. She is also a graduate of the prestigious Leadership Oklahoma program and was appointed in 1999 to serve on the National Trail of Tears Advisory Board by the Secretary of the Interior.
