I took up sculpture late in life and have regretted not starting earlier ever since. As the nephew of a Master Artist of the Five Civilized Tribes and Chickasaw Hall of Fame Inductee, I hesitated to attempt an art at which my Uncle had so excelled. I now realize that I do not have to match his success or compare our work. I create my sculptures for my own satisfaction and the joy I get from creating. I try to tell a story with each of my sculptures. I enjoy Native American subjects and especially like telling the history of the Chickasaw people. |
"First Sign" - 10 1\4" h x 11 1/2" w x 8" d
First Sign is my first attempt at Bronze Sculpture. It tells the story of a Chickasaw warrior finding a lost helmet from the De Soto expedition. This was the chickasaws first exposure to Europeans. Of course, it did not end well. |
"Battle of Chicaza", 9" h x 11" w x 9" d
The Battle of Chicaza tells the story of the Chickasaw attack on De Soto after he made unreasonable demands on the Minko's hospitality. The Spanish were caught completely by suprise and would have been totally wiped out if the Chickasaws had not broken off the attack. This sculpture shows De Soto, clad only in his night shirt, trying to catch his spooked horse during the battle. |
"High Country Royalty", 10" h x 13" w x 8" d
The Elk is enjoying an early morning jog in the high country. |
"Next Time Listen to Mama", 4 1/2" h x 5" w x 4 1/2" d
This coyote pup has learned the hard way that he should pay attention to what his mother is trying to teach him. The skunk has just taught him a lesson that he won't soon forget. |
"Always Wash Before Dinner", 4 " h x 4" w x 3 3/4" d
A mother raccoon showing her little one how to wash its food before eating. |
